China, which is one of the first countries that comes to mind in the technology field with the smartphones, tablets and many other products they produced, rushed into the construction business. They literally executed the fabrication method to the tower construction and they left question marks in people’s heads with finishing 71-story building in 19 days. The tower is in Guangzhou city and has 800 flats. The construction of this tower started with the renovation of the city for the Asian Games. So, what makes Smart Tower (built in 2015) different?
China’s Guangzhou city had its own difficulties in the city, so it had to be designed as adaptable to the environment and full performance displaying. Also, it had to be finished within a short time. This city is a southern city that is badly damaged by the typhoons every summer. On the other hand, there is a big fault line very close to the city. Tower’s curved structure is one of the solutions as a prevention for these negative factors.
As we all know, air pollution in China has reached to the high dimensions. Moreover, due to the recent intensifying smogs from time to time, alarms were given. For this reason, this issue was the point to be considered most, in the construction of the Pearl River Tower. When the conditions are taken into the consideration, it was designed to produce its own power from the sun and the wind. So, we can say that it is a nature-friendly tower, for consuming less power than the other towers.
Even though this 19-days-finished structure leaves lots of question marks in heads, it was worked studiously on it. Double-skin facades, which are used by Europe to keep the heat inside, have not been used by the warmer countries like China. In the cities like Guangzhou, the heat needs to be kept outside in this way. Therefore, layers were replaced in contrast to that way of usage. This usage was literally a first in the region. For certain, facades were tested for controlling and those tests were fulfilled for the first time, too.
But, how did they save energy, while the optimum conditions are met for the inside? Instead of using air from outside, chilled radiant was used to create an optimum atmosphere for the people inside. Additionally, in comparison with the structures that are using fans to provide air from above, fresh air is provided from the vents on the floor. Air that goes up from the floor takes away the need for the fan and that helps to save energy one more time. This tower, beyond being the first in many ways, became the incentive with energy-saving models. Abovementioned are the only some of the important features of this project. Pearl River Tower is a structure that can answer the questions like “How is that possible?” and “Why not?”. Don’t you think so?
